Hot trip to the Big Banyan tree and Manchinbele dam

As I had mentioned earlier I went to visit the Big Banyan tree last week. As for some info about the place. It is just 25 kms from the City and you can reach the spot either from Kumbalgod on Mysore Road or from Chennenahalli on Magadi Road. It is the fourth largest banyan tree in India, 400 years old and spreads 3 acres altogether.

As for the route, I took the Mysore one. After 2 days of googling on the place and reading travel reports I thought this was better. The other reason is that I love Mysore Road travelling. But my joy ride on Mysore Road ended with Kengeri. After that it is a camel ride baby!! Be ready for anything at all. Moreover we just had google directions...no idea where we really going. But we did reach there...so thanks to all those bloggers!

Now the biggest debate here was that the place is really (at least none of us thought so..) not 3 or 4 acres...Hmm do we overblow information??? But it is really quite a sight. I really didn't expect to see a lot of people at the spot...but surprised again. There were a good lot of people. And more of monkeys.

Now that was a huge entertainment packaged I had not dreamt of. There was this one that ran off with a lady's handbag. And another one that took off an Omni's mirror. Now this one was really beauty concious must say! So anyone visiting this plaec...better be careful of your things.

From the Banyan Tree we also decided to visit Manchinbele dam that was 7 to 8 kms away. Again thanks to Google! Now this was a hot drive. Firstly the road was deserted, bumpy and hot. Moreover we had no idea where we were going. After 10 minutes we were deciding to head back when I caught glimpse of the superb sight. So much of water in Bangalore. I was excited.

We went all the way till the water which was surprisingly cold and clear. Residents around this place use this dam for their cattle, wash and have fun swimming around too! Now that we had come all this way I wanted to go on top of the dam too. But that was a disssapointment. The place for prohibited for visit. Some bloggers had actually written about this but there were some who went too. How...hmm...a question??

I had a real good day and a good bumpy ride too....But at the end of the day....a cold water bath and a good night sleep is cure for all!!!

I was here too!!!

Agreed that it is very difficult to own a piece of land in Bangalore. Or maybe to be more specific anywhere at all. But Indians are the clever lot. They believe they can own any place by just putting their mark on it.

I had been to see the 400 year old Big Banyan Tree in Bangalore lately....would post thatThe sight of that huge tree with a thousand branches and hangings left me open mouthed. But when I looked on I felt hurt at the way the public have treated this tree. There is not even a branch where a name is not written. Could be an individual name or else some crap loves another crap....(That is the most)

I mean seriously...there are some who have climbed branches so high and written their names.....What do they expect to show the world?? As to how much they can go to show their love for themselves or for their loved one!!

One thing to learn from Indians is how not to respect their own culture whether it be customs, historic monuments, anything at all! No wonder Taj Mahal is threatened to be out of the World's Wonders. Each and evry monument I have visited has a million stamps of the people who have been there too...Atleast there is no need of visitor books here!!

But then evntually check this one too....looks like our little monkey is establishing the fact that this place is mine no matter what you write on it...So let's leave the place to its true owners people!!!

Bad Time for Indian Cricket!

In continuation to Team India being out of the World Cup, they seem to be out of ads as well. Big drop in their income I guess...Anyways who was getting money from just playing cricket, right?
Some latest updates are that Sachin is being removed from the Sunfeast ad. They are banking on their Shah Rukh ad instead. Reebok is no more airing their ad with the cricketers and are moving on to basket ball players. Reebok comments that Indian players have lost their mass appeal!! How under-estimating the emotional tide that is gripping India??

Pepsi also is pulling off their "Ladega to Jeetaga" ad. Again they too are banking on SRK. As the generic rule....someone's loss- other's gain!! Poor Saurav after months of no activity was beginning to earn some bucks through Puma Sports but ah...luck evades him too...
Biggest loser in the game...Sony Entertainment Television!!! Poor things...Their viewership drop is going to cost them 150 crores...

And the lucky and smart one of the lot is none other than Hutch...They just had a Chalo World Cup ad with Rahul Dravid that was more of a pre - World Cup ad! For further info on how the corporates thought of utilizing this oppurtunity check this.

Just taking a look at cricketers and their promotions

  • MS Dhoni - TVS Motors, Pepsi, Reebok, Mysore Sandal soap, Brylcreem, Bharat Petroleum and Reliance Communications
  • Yuvraj Singh - Nippo Batteries, Pepsi, Reebok, LG Electronics, Hercules Cycles, Royal Stag, SBI cards and IndianOil, Westside
  • Sachin Tendulkar - TVS Motors, Pepsi, Reliance, Adidas, Sunfeast, MRF, Fiat Palio, Cannon, Airtel and Future group and Manipal health care
  • Rahul Dravid - Britannia, Sansui, Max New York Life, Castrol, Citizen watches, Bank of Baroda and Karnataka tourism
  • Sourav Ganguly - Puma, Pepsi, Tata Indicom, Hero Honda, Britannia and Emami Sona-Chandi Chyawanprash

Team India saves India

When the janatha is having it's final verdict on the dissapointing fall out of Team India from the World Cup 2007 there are some good outcomes from this result. To site a few let's just get back to the old bullet point presentation.
  • Lot of saving in power consumption in India as less late night cricket watching. This is likely to help a lot of problems especially in Karnataka which is big time hit due to the Kaveri issue.
  • More output from man power as the drowsy over night hang overs will be less...Who wants to watch Bangladesh take on Ireland instead of an India - Pakistan match.
  • Healthy Indians as there will be less junk food hogging at late nights!

And to top it all...as compared to these more important ones there could be some less important effects too.

  • Changes in the aging Cricket Team.
  • Chances given to the younger generation.
  • Better team and coach selections.

Even though the above ones are less likely to take place....(When has India broken away from the treaded path??)....the others are definitely due. Thank you Men in Blue...Way to go!! Jai Hind!

Shiva Temple @ Airport Road

When the mind is in turmoil and you feel that there seems nothing that is going right, I always find solaec at a temple. Not one of those kinds who go to the temple every week or go there to find God. I just go when I feel the need to relive myself.
One place I love in Bangalore is the Shiva Temple on Airport Road behind Kemp Fort. A huge statue of Shiva in yoga posture, the biggest in the world..... mesmerising anyone at all. This is one place that I had seen in a lot of photograhps and movies but it took a year in Bangalore for me to go there.

I was really amazed to see this place nicely tuckd away at the back of a heavy traffic Airport Road and that too at the back of Kemp Fort!! Later discovered that it was built by the owners of the place.

The entrance has a statue of Lord Ganesh and then Lord Shiva. Here we see Lord Shiva in the Padmasana pose with Ganga flowing from the knot in his hair. Behind the idol there is the holy cave and within the cave are twelve beautifully decorated Shiv Lingas. The best is the one made of ice that doesn't melt.

In front of the idol is a small wishing pond where you drop a coin and make a wish. No prizes for what I wished!! The entire place is so serene with the Om Nama Shivaya mantra recited repeatedly that really does lift you above.
The idol can be viewed best from inside Kemp Fort. So even though you are not going to visit the Kailas...this is one place you can be to!

When Silence Speaks...

There are times when silence speaks volumes. One such instance is the movie Mozhi that I watched lately! Was pretty much used to the routine Tamil Films of late…After the disaster of watching some with almost the same story line, same action and definitely almost sounding alike songs for sure, I thought I would not be watching any Tamil movies for some time.

But yet again the trailer mania struck. Saw the songs of this movie and fell in love with it. After so long there were some songs that didn’t have the same beats and had some meaningful lyrics without English words….My! An achievement for Tamil movies considering the present scenario…Hats Off to Vidyasagar for that!! Even though one song was a lift from his own Malayalam compositions..

The performances are amazing. Jyothika speaks with her eyes with no words at all. She has really evolved as an actress. Prakash Raj is a natural as usual. He carries off the seriousness and humour so easily! All the characters of the movie including Prithvi Raj are so apt and so in control…Not a bit of overaction and underaction too…And most important none of those filler comedians. The humour is so in built…

Storyline…ok let’s be frank…not all that a new concept or anything but dealt with in a different way. As the movie is about the silence of a girl the movie attempts to talk about emotions literally. The characters actually talk out what they feel, why they behave so etc…Hmm…Wonder how many of us can explain why we behave certainly in situations!!
But all in all…definitely a good movie and worth a watch…so I guess that sums up to highly recommended.

Solar Eclipse or India Eclipsed???

Hmm…The weekend is over again…There begins the wait for another weekend..Another 5 days to go. Strangely it’s solar eclipse in Bangalore today. There are my parents telling me that I shouldn’t be walking outside on a solar eclipse day. Well…how do I convince them that the MNCs of today work on a global platform. So unless you have some kind of a solar eclipse that makes the whole world dark sorry dad…I still have to go to work.

And for people who would be interested we had back to back two eclipses this month!! On March 4th that was on Sunday there was a total lunar eclipse and now is 2007’s first solar eclipse as well!! Now if that’s not enough for co incidence this year Ugadi that s celebrated here in Karnataka and this solar eclipse are on the same day as well…There was my house owner telling me that maybe this spells ill luck for this year…Hmm…I don’t know…I’m really not into all these superstitions. As it is life has enough and more of tensions…To top it can’t keep in mind all these to go ahead with a day!!

I guess this kind of superstition is what is killing India and keeping us from progressing. Ok sometimes reason does fail us!! Maybe there is a day science triumphs on the issue as well. We talk about India Poised these days and India being an IT major with India emerging a super-power... and yet we do not leave these age old superstitions. How can we expect the nation to progress when such retarding beliefs plague our culture?

Away to Banargatta National Park

This is about 22 kms south of Bangalore. The drive to the place is really good in case you are not going there on one of those hot summer days. And if you are going on one of those slight drizzle, sun behind the clouds, lazy afternoons…you will love the ride as I did….

Reached there in the afternoon at about 1. They have an entrance fee of Rs.25 and the prices currently for a grand safari that is a tour to see the Lions, Tigers & Herbivores costs Rs 80/- on regular days and Rs 110.00 on weekends. I was a bit worried if they had cheated me giving me a ticket for a moving camera or still camera…Anyways realised I was safe…That’s what happens if you don’t know the local language…You are always in doubt if you are understood correct.

The prime attraction of the zoo is the butterfly park that was added last year. It also has an Aquarium, a Children's park, Crocodile Farm, Snake park, Prehistoric animals park and a Museum. The best part of the place is the Safari they take you to. Now let me tell you…please don’t expect the kind of hospitality at the Bandipur Safaris. This is pretty basic but still ok.

The funny part is that they take you in this caged vehicle and when you look at the animals you wonder what is on their minds. Do you think they would be thinking of us as the exhibits??? They are roaming in the open. It is us who are behind bars here!!! So you get to see the Deer park, Bear park, Tiger park and the Lion Park. You get to see the white tiger as well which is a pretty animal…I mean not the ferocious looker!!

Apart from the ride what really amused me are the kids in the bus. There were ones who were excited in seeing all the wild life. They were cramming all over the bus trying to see the animals. There were one asking strange questions like…Mom what do they eat? Why are they walking simply? Hmph….kids will always be so!!!

Travel....Lifts me up above!

Must have noticed a new added passion..Travel..I have really begun to enjoy being in Bangalore now. Each time I go to a new place it lifts my spirits. I forget all the tensions around me and go all set to face the week ahead of me. In contrast to the time I used to hate being here, I have begun to live the most out of my life here….so finally Life is really Rocking. Over the past year I have been to a number of places in and around Bangalore. Those were in times high and low. I plan to revisit some of these places in the coming year and even make a note of it all. Did someone say it’s too late for a New Year resolution??

I want to make a note of these because I can relive all those moments again and maybe provide some useful info for people who would like to break free from the heavy traffic and pollution of the Silicon Valley and discover some real valleys. Don’t think the posts would be very regular. But whenever I find the time I will surely post the earlier trips… And as for the ones to come….Look out Bangalore….Here I come once again…Fully rejuvenated…..

A Formal apology!!!

Was chatting with my school day juniors today..As usual the same old question popped up yet again! “Any marriage plans?” My usual reply too…It’s on the cards…Not much happening but. Now how many times have I said the same answer to different people I know….Hmm…Should keep count…

As I told Girish…yeah I keep seeing guys every week but nothings progressing. Just a cup of coffee every week…he he!! Yeah frankly speaking I used to be tensed about this boy seeing situation before. But I guess…as they say practice makes perfect!! I used to dress up for the mega event in the beginning but now it's like what the hell!! This is how I am…Take it or leave it!!

I’ve wondered what would be the state of mind of these guys who are coming to see me. I mean it really doesn’t mean anything to me now. But when I see these guys coming in their best of formal clothes, neatly tucked in and shoes shinning bright…I am really amused!! They come in the belief to meet this extremely good looking girl who would be the other half of the bone they have? Gross!!!

There are a lot of things I notice during those times…See the funniest part is I really don’t even have to consider most of the guys I meet. I mean guys have a feeling they are really tall and put in stats like 170 cm but unfortunately their scales fail them when in front of me!! So I check out other things. They put on super perfumes that day! Their hair is all gelled up and in place. All seem to carry a comb anyways as they seem groomed even after ride on bike with helmets (compulsory in Bangalore now a days). They pick all the smart places to coffee…Café Day, Barista, oo la la!!
This post is a formal apology to all those guys who would have come with so many expectations but I failed them desperately...Hope you all find your perfect suitor!!

Where are the true Kerala beauties??

Last weekend I did happen to see the Miss Kerala 2007 telecast.. I was really shocked to see this. There was a time (or is it still so?? ) when Kerala was supposed to be a state of simplicity and purity. Girls here were supposed to be that village beauties with long hair, dressed in Saree ( that golden border Kerala saree!! ) with flowers in their hair and smelt of coconut oil. I mean Miss Kerala is not something that's a Miss India round or anything that finally goes global according to my knowledge. It’s just another event held.
Some of the profiles of the participants shocked me. There were most who were born and brought up abroad and hardly even spoke Malayalam. Is this the choice we have to pick Miss Kerala from???
I’ve posted some photos here. You can decide for yourself. Not stating anywhere that I am the perfect Kerala girl…No ways..Too mix cultured for that…But seriously this is not what I expected to see..
For more photos view

You will definitely agree with me....especially the rehersal photos!!!

The fever catches fast...yet again!!!

Oh my god….The big time fever is back again and is going to make millions of people all over the world couch ridden again…Yes!!! The World Cup is back.Solid hours of sitting glued to the TV sets yet again...
My first memories of the Cup was in Class 10. I was a bit crazy about cricket at that time though! My Class 10 final exams and that sad India match at Eden Gardens…Unforgettable!! Times have passed. My craze for cricket and cricket stars have faded long back…But still the thought that yet another World Cup is to start tomorrow excites me.

So are we going to make it this time?? Would be like a weather report in the making, right? Or does it call for a management matrix with Strengths, Weakness, Oppurtunity and Threats??? Whatever!!

But as an outsider to the story there is one thing I really don’t understand!! India is a country with a population of over 1 billion. (Sorry if I’m a bit late with that information. I really lost track of that info since school geography papers) Out of this 11 people have to play cricket..Let’s put all those extras too..So that’s 15 in all. Ok great work with numbers, Vidya!

Of these..Irfan Pathan definitely seems to be having fitness issues. Four of them Dravid, Ganguly, Tendulkar and Kumble….Isn’t it time they hit pension plans?? Yuvraj's knee injury demands regular prayers to keep fit.. Some who bat can’t bowl and those who bowl can’t bat… And all this leave way for an event that takes place once in 4 years??? Come on man…can’t we just find 15 people in this billion who can play cricket and are fit too!! Seriously…. when I see those umpteen kids playing cricket on the school grounds I ask this question all the time!!!

My experiments with my Cybershot!!

As I had mentioned earlier Cancerians are at their best or shall I say romantic best durind full moon nights. I will have to add to Linda Goodman and say sun set is also an instant that lifts my spirits and transes me to another state of peace and calm!

These are some experiments I did with the camera I bought myself as birthday gift last year...I know I can get desperate at times...

Ok people....now I'm tired for the day...time to say bye for the day....

Hey.....now I'm really tired...You really don't expect me to be here...I've been shining for you all day long! Give me a break....

And so I'm gone..see you tomorrow!

Rang De Basanti........

That's Holy at HP....

Silence is Golden – Nishabd!!

Did watch a movie this weekend. Know what’s amazing about this. There was a time when I used to watch even 2 movies at the theatre along with 3 cartoon characters, Nagu, Prince and Aneesh. Let me justify that…Watched mostly Hindi movies but Nagu hardly understood any of it. Sure she seems to have improved with time. Prince and Aneesh…you can never talk of them separately..they are an entity! They found only those movies good that had the so called masala in them..And me…I just could watch any crap under the sun!! But that was then…sigh…now after Guru this is my next venture after more than a month.

Really can’t say whether the movie was good or bad. But I did think a lot after watching the movie. I thought of the thousands of couples leading a mundane life. I mean these are the ones that are normal in India. An arranged marriage. Just a few years of the honeymoon period. Then kids, work, life, kid’s marriage etc. Couples who somewhere down the line miss the spark in their marriage!

The life that goes so routine. So predictable with no life in it. If you ask are you alive..yes…but really alive …No! Nishabd is such a story. Jia Khan’s love for Big B can be called an infatuation. One that a girl from a shattered home, bought up without knowing love would feel…so that angle does not interest me.

But Big B….leading a life so perfect. Normal wife, normal daughter!! But he misses life…his creative side…his side that wants to scream and break free..A life that even stops him from sucide…Reason: He wants to spend the remaining days of his life thinking of the tender moments he spent with the 18-year-old. Daring stuff!!
It really put me thinking…is there something we kids can do for our parents…to pull them out of their routine life???

Woman's Day???

Ok yet another Woman’s Day is here. Not that it really makes a difference or made a difference to me at all…But as usual as I was plugged into my radio for my early morning walk, the RJ on Radio City was constantly blabbing about women, woman’s day, rights…..the list continues peppered with all the gifts being given out and the prizes to be won! Talk about the market capitalizing on just about every event!

And… here I here these women talking of the importance of the day in their life. Hey are these people cooking this up for the prize?? Come on I’m one of those fortunate people born in a time where women really don’t have to live behind the door and there are tons of them talking about woman’s liberation and that HE is derived from SHE…. But does all this really mean a lot to me.

They talk about the woman being free to take her own decisions. But didn’t I sacrifice my times when dad told me I couldn’t go out alone when I studied in the Gulf! Thought things would get better when I come back to my own home town. But again there were relatives who said I shouldn’t’ mingle too much with guys!

And even now when I get the various suggestions on what kind of a job to take up, what kind of a guy to look for……….Think the matter ends here?? What about the suggestions that would come from my husband (if there is one) as to where to settle, whether to work or not etc etc!!! So am I not a liberated woman? Yeah!! But do I have the guts to break free from all the ties around me…Don’t think so! If this is my state…working in Bangalore, getting a handsome salary to take care of myself and more…then what will be the state of the less privileged??
So coming back to my question…why are we celebrating Woman’s Day??? And if we are what are we celebrating for???

Life without Limbs.

Yesterday my best friend in Bangalore (the guy who makes me laugh all the time), Surendar, bought a new DVD player. As expected when we took it home his mom said we should play some devotional CD on it first. I know…India still lives on these beliefs. The first time he buys anything it goes on a trip to church first…be it anything at all…shirt, watch, bike anything at all.
So coming back to where I began. His mom played this extra ordinary CD which really touched me. It was a motivational speech by Nick Vujicic. A 25 year old guy born without hands and legs…There is somewhat of a leg if you may call it so!

The first part of the CD was one that shows how Nick manages his everyday activities. This would include brushing his teeth, working on the computer and even swimming!! Oh my God the video was mind blowing!

The second part of the CD is a speech by Nick where he talks about himself and his relationship with God. He talks about how he considered suicide at the age of 10 and then worked towards finding the voice of God in him. Now he has completed a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Financial Planning and Accounting. He is also a speaker in the corporate sector. He holds motivational speeches for the handicapped and at various platforms.

Some of the things that he said really struck me. He believes God loves every one. He then debates with God that if He loves him then why did He make him like this. Nick then goes to argue that each life has a purpose. He realizes his purpose is to share his story and experiences to help others cope with whatever challenge they have in their life and let God turn it into a blessing. He wants to encourage and inspire others to live to their fullest potential and not let anything get in the way of accomplishing their hopes and dreams.

He believes there is nothing called luck, chance or coincidence. God won't let anything happen to us in our life unless He has a good purpose for it all. So if at all there is something bad happening it is for a purpose. It is just to strengthen us for more to come.

Well I have seen a lot of motivational CDs as a part of my course curriculum in college years but this was different. This was a living testimony from some one so limited yet so unlimited!!
For those who would be interested do check out his web page :

Do check out the videos as well…..If you were looking for inspiration find it here!!

The true Cancerian....Me!!

Just dissected myself according to Linda Goodman!! These are some excerpts from the book that I feel exactly match me…

You'll gather lots of clues to the Cancerian nature by doing some Moon-gazing on a clear night in the country. The Cancerian's passing moods are synchronized to the Moon, answering to the same mysterious lunar influence that causes the tides of the ocean to flow in and out. Yet, the Moon doesn't really change at all. It just seems to. Likewise, the Cancerian remains the same person through all his fluctuating highs and lows.
You may first come across him when he's laughing the "crazy lunar laugh." It's inescapably contagious. It runs up and down the scales with a deep, throaty undertone. It giggles and gurgles, then finally erupts in a loud cackle that sounds exactly like two hundred hens laying two hundred perfect eggs. In his life-of-the-party mood, youll have no trouble finding the Cancerian. Hell be the funniest one in the room, a laugh a minute. If he's not performing himself, then he'll be grinning at someone else's antics. No one likes a joke better than Cancer.
On the other hand, Cancer can turn bluer than an inkwell, and drown you in depression deeper than the floor of the ocean. His fears are usually well covered by the nutty lunar humor, but they are always with him, haunting his days and nights with a vague sense of nameless dangers, lurking in the shadows. Pessimism is never far away, always ready to spoil those beautiful nights of fancy.
His tears are never crocodile tears. They flow from the deep rivers of his fragile and vulnerable heart. You can wound his sensitive feelings with a harsh glance or a rough t- tone of voice. Cruelty can bring on brimming eyes or a 'complete withdrawal (It's an odd thing that Cancerians seldom get fevers; they're more likely to suffer from the chills.) It won't be easy to spot the crab in this mood, because when he's hurt, he disappears into reproachful silence.

Cancer Woman :

During the rainy season, she'll drown you in her sorrows. When the sun peeks through the clouds again, she'll double you up with laughter, and touch you with tenderness. She's just a little mad, slightly sad and superbly imaginative.
Naturally, you can't look under her mattress until after you've married her. Modesty is a thing with her. But you can safely make a bet she probably has an old sock there, stuffed with green bills and silver coins.
Open One of her books of poetry, and a wrinkled dollar bill may fall out, blinking at the light of day. A Cancer female can go on a sudden spending spree when she's been hurt and needs balm for her injured ego, but most of the time her outgo will lag considerably behind her income. When you give this girl a terribly expensive gift, and she says, "You shouldn't have done it," let me tell you, she means it.
She hates to be criticized, she is deeply wounded by ridicule, and she just can't stand being rejected. One, two, three. They're basics. Seldom openly aggressive, the typical Cancerian hesitates. You'll have to make the first move.
Never read her five-year-diary. It probably has a lock and key, anyway. Cancerians like to keep secrets. They're not much for true confessions, unless you're the one doing the confessing.
The fears of your lunar lovely can really hang you up, along with her. She's afraid she isn't pretty enough, she isn't smart enough, she isn't young enough or she isn't old enough.
they have this little habit of saving things. You could say it's a downright compulsion. She'll seldom throw away pieces of string, buttons, jars, cans, husbands, or old dress patterns. Who are you to say she won't find a purpose for those torn theater stubs, faded love letters and used tea bags?

The woman part of it....I didn't sit to highlight as all of it is true!!! I did have a diary with a lock and store tons of things I don't need due to sentimental values!!
